To minimize the impacts of plastic on the environment and to find an alternative solution, youths have paved 100-meter pitch road by grinding plastics. Min Bahadur G.C, Mayor of Pokhara Metropolitan Municipality on Tuesday inspected and inaugurated the road constructed by the youths in Anupam Tole 14, Pokhara.

The Green Road Waste Management Company sent Mechanical Engineer, Bimal Bastola and Civil Engineer, Rajeev Subedi to Bhutan for a weeks' training of methodical construction of road black paving by using plastic.

Day by day the chemicals from plastic is polluting the environment, which has become a grave issue. Though the Government has brought the policy of banning plastic products and bags, it has not come to effective implementation.

The youths of Green Road Waste Management Company, Pokhara believe that they can use plastic waste for the purpose of paving roads black and they have used this foreign method in their town.

According to the Bimal Bashyal, Director of the Company, 'This method was first started in the year 2001 in India. Plastic have negative impacts in the environment as well as human health. Using plastic to pave the roads is cost-effective, durable and reliable.'

Engineer Rajeev Subedi informed that about 300 kgs of plastic is needed to blacktop 100 meters of road. 2475 kgs of tar along with 8 to 16 percent of plastic was used in this method. Though all methods used for this project was brought from outside, it only costed them 20 thousand rupees. If all equipment are to be brought here, it will cost even less.

According to Engineer Bimal Bastola, 'Bitumen, plastic, sand and chips are mixed and heated for this work. For this purpose, the compact plastic are to be broken down into small pieces. This is the first time in Nepal, where road is blacktopped using this method. Maximum plastic wastes are deposited here from Pokhara, and so we started to experiment road paving in this area.'

Except the plastic bottles and pipes, plastic covers of gutkha and noodles can be used for this purpose. This method can save up to 1 ton of tar by using 1-ton plastic as its alternative. This will help to bring plastic waste solution, make land fill site last longer and make the roads more intact, strong, durable and also helps to minimize cost of blacktopping roads.
